I have taken some time to look more at the picture showed in class by Jeff Wall. I think the picture is a very interesting representation of the original painting by Manet. I really think that without the explanation of the piece, the audience would have a difficult time connecting the two works. While there are plenty of similarities between the two, and the connection becomes much more obvious once the process is explained, I think the final photo taken can be considered a completely original piece of work. Inspiration is drawn from everywhere, so just because Wall allowed the Manet piece to consciously inspire his work, doesn’t mean that the replication of the one has to entirely mimic the other. There are many other occurrences of this type of replication in all forms of art, but one especially obvious is music. A cover band many chose to recreate a particular song exactly as the original artist had previously recorded it; while at the same time another group may completely change everything about the song keeping only the lyrics or the themes the same. I found this cover of the Modest Mouse song Float On, which is one of my all time favorite songs.
